plenty of fish in the sea

February 19, 2013
plenty of fish in the sea

“There’s lots of good fish in the sea…maybe…but the vast masses seem to be mackerel or herring, and if you’re not mackerel or herring yourself, you are likely to find very few good fish in the sea.”

― D.H. Lawrence, Lady Chatterley’s Lover

Taking the cliche and turning it on its head to reveal a truth: there maybe plenty of fish in the sea, but most of those fish won’t be for you. And I (personally) believe this is true. There may be lots of single people out there and you can meet tons of them, but if you have nothing in common with them–you’re a seal and they’re a shark–you won’t mesh at all. You also have to take into account desirable qualities you want (and/or need) in a person, and just by adding those to your list, you eliminate a lot of fish. Course, people always tell you to be open and not to be so narrow-minded in your search for said fish, but a lot of time you seek out those desirable qualities in a person for a reason. Sometimes you can’t deal with certain types and if you know you can’t deal with those types, it only makes sense to not seek for those types. So you eliminate those types, and with a narrower selection, there aren’t as many compatible fish out there as people seem to say to you.

So why do people insist on relaying this obvious untruth?
