my summer of love art journal

July 26, 2013

my summer of love art journal

Hey! It took me awhile to post pictures of my Summer of Love art journal for various reasons. One, I didn’t get a book until about four or five days into the class. Two, when I did get my book, I had a day to mess around with it before my friend Jenna came to stay with me for a week. Three, when Jenna left, my family and I took a vacation to Puerto Rico. And even though the class is over, I’m still filling up my journal as I’m way behind on all the prompts and of course I’m adding a few of my own page ideas. Plus, I probably won’t stop filling it up until September, which is more than a month or so away.

Anyway, I love making this art journal. I never would have thought to journal in a book you make yourself. For awhile, I was journaling in an old planner I still had laying around. But this is way better because I can actually use the pages from the book I destroyed and it’s way more decorative than old scribbled up planner pages, which I ended up covering or painting over with gesso anyway. Essentially, I’m making a book from a book–well, more like building upon a book and making it better.

But I’m really having fun with this. I haven’t been art journaling for very long–a few months at most–and I’m already building up my scrap paper collection. I think the more I journal, the more I’m aware of saving receipts and scrap memo paper, labels, etc. I’ve even been saving magazines that I would have normally tossed after a few months. I’m even incorporating some of the photos I’ve been taking throughout the summer. Not all are prompts from Kara’s class, but most were taken using certain techniques I learned from doing the prompts (like the transfers in one of the journaling pages below and most of the photography). This class was probably one of my best investments this summer and I encourage anyone who’s interested in art journaling or photography to take this class. Even though it’s over, the prompts are still up on the private blog and you get a pdf of the whole class, to do the prompts at your own pace. It’s fantastic for art journaling beginners (like myself) and well as getting to know your camera better. So it’s definitely worth it! Check it out:

Still working in my @getmessyartjournal Season of Still working in my @getmessyartjournal Season of Bloom art journal. I had so much fun with this color scheme and style that I went ahead and made two matching #littleartnotes! This color combo is super rare for me (Titan Buff and Titan Mars Pale with Payne's Gray marks), but I'm really digging it!

Happy Friday Loves! xx
When I originally set up these pages in my @getmes When I originally set up these pages in my @getmessyartjournal Season of Bloom art journal, I left a lot of space to write about what blooming means to me. It means growth, blossoming, and becoming. It means to flourish. It also represents nature and the restorative power of being in the wild.

Bloom means a lot to me and yet while finishing up some of these half-finished pages, I was at a loss for words. This is when I found that word phrase stickers really help get the message across. xx
Just another spread in my @getmessyartjournal Seas Just another spread in my @getmessyartjournal Season of Bloom art journal. A lot of these pages were already in progress, so it's interesting to see them finished. I'm sure I had other intentions for what they were going to look like a couple of years ago when I first created this journal. Now, I'm content with matching colors, adding paint, and a few scribbles. This journal is all about the process of creating for me now, which I think is still a source of growth. xx
Another spread in my @getmessyartjournal Season of Another spread in my @getmessyartjournal Season of Bloom art journal. I rather like how this one turned out! I'm quite obsessed with using this Payne's Gray NeoColor crayon to make some scattered marks on my page. You might see a lot more of this in future spreads from this book. xx
I've been enjoying following along with the @getme I've been enjoying following along with the @getmessyartjournal #getmessymay prompts. I've basically been just watching them as they are posted. But the other night, I attempted the Happy prompt and it literally has gotten back into simply playing around with my supplies. I pulled out this very old Seasons of Bloom journal that is SO CLOSE to being finished. I figure I'd channel all of this creative energy I have right now to finishing it up!

I'm not responding to any particular prompt, just using the processes and techniques shared to finally complete this journal. xx
